Variety – The Spice of Life

An 18th century English poet, William Cowper, once wrote, “Variety’s the very spice of life, that gives it all it’s flavor.”  At Toolless every new prototype for a costume plastic enclosure or housing is different.  Our custom enclosures are used by many different companies and inspired entrepreneurs ranging from energy management to equipment for photography and radiology and everything in between — business is good and the variety of customers is giving Toolless a lot of flavor.

We just finished a prototype that is a small plate to cover a hole left when a customer removed an unwanted component from an infrastructure management node’s metal frame.  His entire project was done in metal and he didn’t need the entire thing to be re-accomplished – he just needed to cover an unsightly hole.  The project was simple and the results effective.

A customer sent an injection molded enclosure they were using and wanted us to match the curved contour.  This seemed like it would take a lot of trial and error to get the curved top surface correct.  But with a little brainstorming, an idea was hatched.  We put their part on the copy machine and scanned a picture.  Then we imported the picture into Solidworks, determined a known dimension, then scaled and sketched over the picture.  The customer was pleased with the result and we learned a little and added to our “tool box.”

Bottom line is we make more than just a 6 sided box.  We make plates, covers, troughs, 5 sided boxes; nothing we won’t try.  We are always looking forward to the next challenge to add more spice to Toolless.

Until next time,

Scott
